Mission: We are creating an urban kibbutz in the warm and sunny city of San Diego. We want to create a living space where families and individuals of all ages and Jewish sects will live together, enjoy dinner together daily and share the news of their day. A warm and friendly home where folks can enjoy Jewish holidays and celebrations. Where the familiar, warmth and heimishness of Jewish traditions can be shared, however, with the nuances and individuality that accompany modern progressive values.
From www.ic.org/directory/avrahams-tent-the-jewish-intentional-community-of-san-diego/:
Working together to create a Jewish Intentional community / urban kibbutz in San Diego, where it’s warm and sunny 364 days/year.We will build a sustainable multi-generational community grounded in the Jewish calendar and Jewish values. Singles, couples, and families of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. We envision a community that feels like home: warm, familiar and heimische (Yiddish for warm, homey, down-to-earth, and familiar).
As a community, we will
celebrate Jewish holidays and take these opportunities to gather together with our friends, families, and neighbors;
provide creative Jewish programming and education for children and adults;
create opportunities for interfaith learning and partnerships.
The community will have
-a large common area including an industrial kitchen and eating area that can accommodate 2-3 times the number of all occupants.
-a large outdoor area for flexible use: gatherings, picnics, etc.
-edible garden
-20-30 “family” units, i.e., 25-60 adults. Each unit:
• has 1-6 people and has their own private “tiny” living space, with their own sleeping, living and cooking areas.
• is expected to a) pay for their living space plus “maintenance” fees that will cover food, cleaning, and more, b) work outside the community, c) contribute certain # of hours per month to preparing communal meals.
