Started in 1969 by a faction of Hedrick House members who wanted a less-structured living style, the group, which called themselves New Community, began renting different houses in the late 1960s and running them as sort of counterculture, utopian co-op experiments.

Toad Lane cooperative split from New Community in the 80s, and in 1997 New Community became an Honors theme house for several years, before returning to open membership.
