Meet the neighbors:

Mission: The world has lost its sense of the beauty. It has forgotten the beauty and joy of love-- St John's Rule

You have beguiled me with desire, O Christ, and with love divine transformed me-- Orthodox Liturgy

We are a small, Orthodox Christian, community located at 155 Broadview Ave (East Toronto). We are seeking to build a communal life that is structured around the reality of God’s love in the midst of the city. Our life together is marked by the rhythms of prayer, study, liturgy, community life, and a variety of work motivated by a deep respect and love for the poor (our masters, as the early church reminds us). Some of our projects involve running a bakery, thrift store, visitor house, and creating spaces where people can exist without charge and come to discover their own value and mystery. Most recently, we are looking to find ways to be present for folks who are living in very difficult high rises in neighboring Scarborough. We are renting out apartments and attempting to participate more fully in the lives of these neighbors and looking for ways we can offer Xt (love, joy, beauty) into these spaces. All of this work is informed by an overarching attempt to live more deeply and boldly into the intoxicating vision of The Gospel and the Byzantine Liturgy. Though we are committed to the deep value of our tradition, our community includes people from a wide variety of traditions. We have a beautiful mission that is divided into two rooms. One is a place of outreach where dinners are served. Our life has been deeply influenced by the writings of Jean Vanier, Dorothy Day, and the spirituality of the Little Brothers of Jesus. Applicants need not be orthodox but they would need to be interested in learning about this faith and participating in our liturgical and prayer life. Room and board can be provided. Interested folks should contact Gary at goneil327@gmail.com

From www.ic.org/directory/st-john-the-compassionate-mission/:

We are small group of young adults (mostly in our late 20s and early 30s). The community was founded by a charismatic former Little Brother of Jesus who continues to live on top of the bakery. He is assisted in running the community by another young priest and an older deacon. We are trying to build a substantial lay wing to this community.
