Meet the neighbors:

Mission: We aspire to live simple and healthy lives in a family oriented community setting. Our goal is to reconnect to our means of existence by meeting our needs with land based local economy. We also focus on getting along and character development. We hope to re-cultivate a more meaningful existence for our children than is offered by modern society.

From www.ic.org/directory/long-haul/:

We are currently in search of a live in nanny/au pair (female preferred) especially for the winter months (November-April). Duties would include about 3 hours of babysitting per day, maybe some help with homeschooling and possibly some other help around the house (cooking, cleaning etc). We’re looking for someone who will be actively engaged with our children while watching them and someone who enjoys both indoor and outdoor activities (including lots of playing in the snow even when its cold out). Depending on qualifications and length of stay, in addition to room and board, we may be able to offer a modest stipend which could be negotiable.
We can host visitors from May-October for general homestead infrastructure work including, gardening, building, firewood etc.

We’re a young family of 5 + 1 friend + 1 family of 3 with 60 acres of forest land surrounded by thousands of acres of wilderness. We've cleared an acre or two and we're in the process of designing our future permaculture food forest/orchard. So far we've planted over 20 young fruit trees as well as raspberries, blueberries and strawberries among other things. We'll be planting a lot of perennials this year. We just completed a 7ftx12ft seed starting greenhouse addition off our house and we have a 13ftx20ft hoophouse. We grow most of our annuals in cedar raised beds we milled and built. We're surrounded by mature maple and mixed boreal forest which is primarily public land. WE DO NOT HAVE A WELL YET (no running water). There's a spring near the center of the property and we catch rainwater off our roof. We're 5 miles as the crow flies from the North Shore of Lake Superior and less than a mile from three small lakes. There are many hiking trails close by including the Superior Hiking Trail. We're 20 miles south of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Some of what we currently do includes building using mostly natural and salvaged materials, log building, permaculture based gardening and planting, clearing land, cutting and chipping wood, making trails, maple syruping and wild ricing, and some hunting and fishing. We're 7 miles from town on a good dirt road and then 2 miles up an old rutted logging road only passable with 4×4 vehicles, hence the “Long Haul”. We mostly use a snowmobile for winter access up the 2 mile road which is not plowed or maintained. We eventually plan on doing some road improvement once we have the resources. We have a work party every fall. We're off the grid with wi-fi internet through cell phone towers and solar electricity. We cook and heat with wood. We're happy to host visitors who are self reliant and able to get their basic needs met in a primitive camp setting. We also have opportunities for work trade internships with meals and lodging provided. We have a tiny insulated guest cabin with a woodstove. We are interested in the possibility of doing a land share and setting up a non-profit co-ownership structure if the right folks came along. The land is paid for and we never ask for money from any visitors. We are open to visitors for any length of stay or level of commitment. Our long term vision is to share the land with 2-8 other households with similar interests. Please check our other websites for more info. Feel free to contact us with any questions and thanks for your interest.
