Mission: To be an urban community
From www.ic.org/directory/prudence-crandall-house/:
Prudence Crandall House (PCH) had evolved our 1970's model of collective living into the 21st century within our 1912, 5 bedroom+++, 3,000-sq-ft with lots of common space, Craftsman house on the Berkeley-Oakland border. As the last of the original founders, a retired house remodeler, I am moving out of my home of 44 years into mor eappropriate housing for a senior.I hope to see this house continue as a community, so I am trying to help the process, but it needs to happen immediately.
I sold this house. The new owner defaulted, it will be auctioned soon.
The house next door will be placed on the market sometime in the next year.
The appraised value for this house is $1,175,000 and would probably sell for more if listed on the open market. I am offering this house for $1,100,000 fixed price. Please inquire for more information about this house.
The house itself has been improved to accommodate collective living. Green features include extensive insulation, wood-burning stove with a catalytic converter, solar hot water tank, and photovoltaic panels on the roof. The rich dense soil has been improved with composting since 1972. Perennial crops include raspberries, apples, figs, persimmons, pomegranate and herbs, as well as year-round vegetable beds.
We are in an active neighborhood group of two adjacent blocks with 148 households and no through traffic. Additionally, there are other seniors in the immediate neighborhood interested in selling (over the next several years) to households committed to “shared-living.” Potential options to buy include three single family houses and one 4-plex on the same block.
