Meet the neighbors:

Mission: Kalani was founded by two professional artists, Earnest Morgan and Richard Koob, MFA, former Hawai'i State Arts Coordinators, and University of Hawai'i instructors versed in dance, drama, painting, drawing, music, Hawaiian, African, Asian and European cultural arts, and yoga. Since Kalani's beginning in 1975, many culture and arts forms have been and continue to be celebrated in the annual and weekly ongoing events.

Kalani's property was at one time a traditional ahupua'a, or land portion, that was cared for by an `ohana, or extended family, who benefited from its stewardship. A halau, or Hawaiian cultural school, graced the ocean frontage of Kalani until 1900. This site, with its paths, lava walls and smooth stone floor, is preserved along with a heiau (temple) site and burial grounds.

In the 1870's, Hawaii's beloved monarch, Kalākaua, reinstated the practice of hula after years of suppression from the missionaries. A renaissance of Hawaiian culture has continued ever since, celebrated annually in Hilo's Merrie Monarch Festival, during which Kalani holds the Puna Music Festival.

From www.ic.org/directory/kalani-oceanside-retreat/:

Kalani is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational retreat center and eco-community in Hawai‘i Island’s colorful Puna District, and a premiere destination for over 40 years. Kalani hosts individual retreats, group workshops, sabbatical, and community life experiences in on-site accommodations that range from off-grid campsites to eco-cottages constructed from sustainably harvested wood and bamboo.

Kalani is great for year-round personal getaways or group retreats (up to 125)! Kalani is the only coastal lodging facility within the Aloha State's largest conservation area.

One of Kalani’s guiding principles is to preserve and enhance our pristine, 120-acre campus and surrounding Puna District through sustainable education programs and hands-on community participation. To that end, Kalani has become a living model for discovering and implementing best practices in permaculture, sustainability, and community development in a breathtaking tropical oasis. For all the latest happenings on our lively campus, check out our Blog or follow us on Facebook and Instagram!

Nearby are thermal springs, a black sand beach visited by dolphins and whales, orchid farms, snorkel tidal pools, steam bathing, waterfalls, botanical gardens, historic villages, and spectacular Volcanoes National Park.

Kalani is expanding its facilities beginning in 2007 and is accepting a limited number of new investors and residents.
