Meet the neighbors:

Mission: The Winona Catholic Worker is a diverse faith community that serves people experiencing homelessness in the tradition of Peter Maurin and Dorothy Day.
Our community runs by consensus, which means each core community member must agree with every major decision our community makes. We have no hierarchy within our core community. We are all in charge together. Anarchists call this style of decision making "consensus democracy."
Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin rooted their work in the Roman Catholic tradition; however, many houses of hospitality are run by non-Catholics. While our community has included many Roman Catholics, being Catholic is not a prerequisite to being part of our community. Currently the majority of our core community are not Roman Catholic.
There is a long history of nonviolent civil disobedience in the Catholic Worker Movement. Dorothy Day was arrested for protesting militarism. Our community has a history of organizing anti-war and pro-environment direct actions. That said, protesting is secondary to our work of hospitality and not a requirement for live-in volunteers.

From www.ic.org/directory/winona-catholic-worker/:

We are two houses of hospitality in the Catholic Worker tradition offering drop-in hospitality and evening meal for anyone in need, Monday through Friday at the Bethany House (832 W Broadway). We also offer overnight hospitality for single women at the Dan Corcoran House (802 W Broadway). We publish a newsletter, hold monthly roundtable discussions on topics of current interest, and occasionally organize community events of protest. All are welcome to join us for weekly Eucharistic liturgy on Mondays at 5:00pm, followed by community supper.

Volunteers needed:
We are seeking live-in community members to share in intentional community and the works of mercy. If you are a light-hearted, compassionate, and fun person you might enjoy sharing your life with the poor in our small, family style houses of hospitality. Live-in volunteers are not paid for their work but do receive free room and board as well as use of a community vehicle. Winona is a small city in southeastern Minnesota, located between the Mississippi River and its bluffs. The scenic beauty of the area helps to strengthen our awareness of rural life and farming issues, while maintaining a global justice perspective.
