Mission: community, sustainability

From www.ic.org/directory/bloomington-cooperative-living-inc/:

Bloomington Cooperative Living is a housing cooperative in Bloomington, IN. We currently house almost 50 residents in three houses. Our mission is to foster an economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable society by promoting the value of cooperation and diversity. We were born in 2007, on Halloween.

Our houses, Helm's Deep, Woodlandia and Middle Earth are all walking distance to the IU-Bloomington campus as well as to the heart of downtown Bloomington. Middle Earth house is owned by our cooperative, while the other two properties are rented. We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit for low-income housing, so we keep all our rent expenses affordable. To accomplish this, we share expenses for food and utilities, driving costs down.

Our membership includes a range of undergraduate, graduate and non-students. We feel that a diverse membership enriches the coop, especially since we practice democratic decision-making at the house- and coop-level. Our coop is active in the local community, ranging from participation in the art and music scene, hosting events in collaboration with other organizations that align with our mission, and sharing our space with volunteer groups like Food Not Bombs.
