• Fellowship for Intentional Community

The Lake Village farm was begun in 1971, dedicated to exploring a more sustainable environmental ethic. This extended-family commune occupies a mile-and-one-half of Long Lake's northeast shoreline, having grown to approximately 350 acres of forest, meadow, and farming space. Over the past 30 years there have been approximately 300 different people from all over the world who have participated in the Lake Village program. Today there are 50 members in all who are a part of this cooperative farm effort. Most members live on additional land purchased privately, bordering the Lake Village premises. Some members live off the farm while working there during the day. Others live on the commune and hold jobs in the greater Kalamazoo area as teachers, social workers, secretaries, wait staff, plumbers, roofers, counselors, and, of course, as students in the various area schools.

We consider ourselves a large extended family and are very much a part of the greater Kalamazoo community, which we hope is likewise dedicated to promoting an ecological, sustainable lifestyle--so that our children's children may enjoy the future blessings of a healthy Mother Earth.
