MOSAIC Co-op

Meet the neighbors:

Mission: Through cooperative action, MOSAIC seeks to develop a diverse, inclusive community which inspires and empowers creative, conscious, sustainable living.

From www.ic.org/directory/mosaic-communities/:

MOSAIC ("Members of Society Acting in Cooperation") began as the brainchild of a group of Northwestern students who were interested in finding an alternative form of student housing in Evanston. They founded the original house at 2013-2015 Ridge Avenue, and in September of 1998 the first 12 co-op members moved in.

They established the original mission statement and developed a house structure based on cooperative living. Using the mission statement, they tried to guide the activities of the house along principles such as environmental sustainability, consensus decision making, and social & political activism.

In the summer of 2004, MOSAIC moved to its current location at 2000 Sherman Avenue (known as "The Zooo"), where we have resided ever since. Additionally, in 2015, MOSAIC expanded to a second house at 1427 Elmwood Avenue ("The Treehouse"). Today, MOSAIC is a vibrant, two-house, 23-person cooperative, with ambitions of further expansion and development in the future.

By pooling our resources, we hope to minimize our costs of living and maximize the power behind our decisions as conscious consumers. We are a close-knit community dedicated to living out our ideals and values in our daily actions and interactions.

Our first house, "The Zooo", is approximately two blocks from Northwestern University, and most of our members (in either house) are students there. However, we have no formal affiliation with the university, and we welcome undergraduate students, graduate students, non-students, students of life, and everyone else.

To learn more about our co-op, please visit our website or email us! Additionally, if our community interests you, please feel free to stop by for dinner sometime — both of our houses have several vegetarian/vegan communal dinners per week, and guests are always welcome.
