Meet the neighbors:

Mission: The mission of Richmond Cohousing is to create an intentional multi-generational community of households who are good neighbors and conscientious environmental stewards.

Living in close proximity and sharing resources, we increase quality of life by caring for one another, celebrating together, reducing consumption, decreasing our impact on the environment, and offering Richmond a new model of vibrant neighborhood design.

From www.ic.org/directory/richmond-cohousing/:

Richmond Cohousing is working with a developer to build a multi-generational, urban cohousing community in Richmond, Virginia. The developer owns the land and plans are with the city for approval with anticipated groundbreaking this spring and move-in late 2019. All you need to bring is a deposit, mortgage, and a covered dish!

Our condo-style building will have 19 single-level one-, two- and three-bedroom units on four floors with anticipated prices ranging from $185k to $365k. Common spaces include a large first floor area featuring a kitchen, dining/meeting area, and kids’ play room, a storage area, and a 2000 square foot rooftop deck with views of downtown. We plan to have multiple weekly shared meals and a collaborative rooftop garden. Site and unit designs are still being fine-tuned but some unit-types are going fast. Commitments from prospective buyers are encouraged by November 2018 with construction slated to begin Spring 2019.

Our site is in the Manchester neighborhood of Richmond. This historic area is just over the James River from downtown and walkable or bikable to many attractive features including a library, restaurants (and two breweries!), shops, playgrounds and pocket parks, a large farmer’s market, and outdoor activities at the river. Public transit and bike lines are expanding throughout the area.

Richmond is located in the heart of Virginia and is one of America’s oldest cities. Our site in the state’s capital, just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a two-hour drive from both Washington DC and the Tidewater region. Richmond has the benefits of both a major metropolitan area and small historic city with amenities, charm, and convenience. The city provides residents with a diverse employment, social, and community opportunities.

Richmond Cohousing has been active for a number of years. We’ve sung, biked, played games, and volunteered together. We’ve eaten delicious community dinners in each other’s homes. We’ve drafted agreements that assert the way we want to live together as a community. We’ve honed our meeting format to a fast-paced, no-nonsense structure. And we’ve laughed - a lot. Through it all, we’ve become a genuine community and are excited for others to join us with their own perspectives and personalities. Richmond Cohousing is looking to attract a diverse membership and welcomes singles, couples, families, and those wanting to age in place. There's still time to make your mark on the community by helping us affirm our values, finalize our designs, and create new community traditions.
