Mission: cooperation, sustainability, justice

From www.ic.org/directory/currents/:

Currents community formed in the late 1970s as an outgrowth of our regional food co-op network. In 1981, we bought a 163-acre farm in the Appalachian hills of southeast Ohio near the progressive university town of Athens, a very supportive macro-community environment. We began community life together in the original farmhouse and another multi-family house that we built. Those houses are still the center of our community. Since then we have built 6 family homes, and the infrastructure and facilities to support a pleasant, meaningful life in a rural, multi-generational community. We are committed to creating a replicable model of joint land ownership and sustainability practices, grounded in cooperative principles and affordability.

Within that model, our original intention was to create a home base for members engaged in various forms of nonviolent social change activism. Changing times have impressed on us the need to incorporate an even stronger commitment to sustainability practices – or, “Earth justice” – as the necessary foundation for social justice.

To that end, we are looking ahead to growing more food, developing a conscious relationship with our land and its potential, transitioning to renewable energy, and encouraging home-based economic enterprises. We welcome inquiries from energetic visionaries who would appreciate the stability of a long-established community, while also welcoming the challenge of co-creating with us a new, forward-thinking model of community life for the difficult times ahead.
