Regional Index of Cooperation: holding a mirror to the cooperative economy

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this site for?

This is a directory of organizations working to build a cooperative economy that works for people -- cooperatives, credit unions, community-based organizations, etc. The directory is sponsored by Cooperative Life, the Northeast Federation of Cooperatives (www.cooplife.coop). Our database is seeded by CDI, and can be freely extended and modified by anyone. It was developed as part of Noémi Giszpenc's thesis for the Community Economic Development program (CED) at the Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU).

Won't people fill the directory with spam?

Changes are monitored and easily revoked, Wiki-style. A group of volunteers act as moderators. Individuals can volunteer to moderate entries they make or change in the directory.

Why are there duplicate entries?

The original database used to seed this site had many duplicates. We have made an effort to remove the clear-cut cases, but many near-duplicates still remain. If you come across near-duplicates, feel free to delete or merge them.

Why are some things missing?

The directory is far from complete. If your organization is not listed and you feel it should be, please go ahead and add it.

Why am I getting a strange map?

Not all organizations have complete addresses which can be located geographically. Even for those that do, the service we use for generating maps is currently not very sophisticated. Please bear with us as we improve this part of our service.

Where can I report problems, or offer help?

We'd be delighted to hear from you at coopy@csail.mit.edu.
